Bishop Verot High School’s Luke Lanman, top, defends Fort Myers’ Harrison Personnett during the District 18 lacrosse final Friday at the Canterbury School in Fort Myers. Bishop Verot beat Fort Myers 13-6.

Once Bishop Verot broke the scoring seal four minutes into the first quarter, there was little the Fort Myers boys lacrosse team could do on Friday in the District 18 final at Canterbury.

Cruising out to a 6-0 lead, the Vikings never really lost control after that, claiming their fourth straight title with a 13-6 win before a nearly packed house.

It was Bishop Verot’s second straight win over Fort Myers in the district final.

“We came out ready to play tonight,” said Bishop Verot coach Gary Neese, whose team defeated the Green Wave 17-14 in 2015. “We pitched a shutout in the first quarter. It’s tough to beat a good team three times in a year. And they are a very talented team.”

Senior attacker Joe Cerniglia had three goals, junior attacker Zack Liberto added three goals and three assists, and sophomore goalie Kenny Leddy posted 22 saves to lead the Vikings (14-5) into the Class A first round play-in game.

The Vikings will face Sarasota Cardinal Mooney, 16-7 winners over Out of Door Academy in the District 17 final, on Friday in Sarasota. Bishop Verot last faced the Cougars on Feb. 22, losing 17-10.

Despite reaching the state’s play-in game for the past three seasons, Bishop Verot has yet to win.

“I think the morale just came back,” Cerniglia said. “We had a five game streak where our whole team was down. But I think this is going to pump us back up.”

For the Green Wave (9-5), the loss ended a fantastic stretch in which the team won seven out of its last nine games. Yet, it came after their former head coach, Chip Dopman, was dismissed midseason following controversy inside the locker room.

All Fort Myers did from there was show resiliency, interim head coach Josh Vasquez said. The team responded with a handful of significant victories, including a come-from-behind win against Estero on Feb. 26, just days after the turmoil.

The Green Wave defeated Canterbury 12-10 in the District 18 semifinal on Tuesday to advance to the finals.

“They showed a lot of heart,” Vasquez said. “You saw it throughout the year. They showed heart in the beginning. They showed heart now. They got down, we came back. Almost every game we won, we got down and then we won.”

Mull: Mistakes cost Fort Myers coach, player lacrosse season

But the Green Wave had few answers for a relentless Bishop Verot defense Friday, which swarmed Fort Myers on countless occasions. Neese commented that the team showed a zone it hadn’t used all year.

“We confused them a little bit.”

The Vikings pushed the lead as high as nine, 10-1, with 5:55 left in the third quarter. An end-to-end score by Luke Lanman, who finished with two goals, capped off the stretch.

But Fort Myers scored the game’s next four goals, cutting the deficit to five goals with 1:14 left in the frame. In fact, the Green Wave berated Bishop Verot over one remarkable run, scoring three goals over the course of 24 seconds.

However, the Vikings answered with a goal of their own to end the half, then padded the lead late in the fourth quarter with goals by both Liberto and Cerniglia.

The Estero girls lacrosse team celebrates a District 18 championship after upsetting previously undefeated Canterbury 13-6 Friday in Estero

The Estero girls lacrosse team had exactly one year to stew over watching a district title slip through its fingers in the last 45 seconds of a loss to Canterbury. The Wildcats spent an entire offseason preparing for one moment.

Nothing was left to the final minute this time. Sophie Forker and Arianna Endelmann tallied three goals apiece as Estero (16-5) jumped out to a four-goal lead it never relinquished as it upset previously undefeated Canterbury (17-1) 13-6 Friday in the District 18 title game at Jeff Sommer Field.

“I just had faith that my girls had as much talent as Canterbury,” Wildcats coach Erika Anderson said. “And Canterbury’s a very talented team. We just wanted it more tonight.”

Estero will face Bradenton St. Stephen’s in a first-round play-in game April 15.

The 17-5 and 10-9 losses to Canterbury during the regular season only fueled the fire in Estero as it upset Bishop Verot on Tuesday to earn a rematch.

“We really wanted it for our teammates who had to feel the pain of losing like that last year,” junior goalkeeper Sarah Smith said. “We wanted it really bad.”

Haley Swinehart, Forker and Brittany Monteiro struck quickly with goals in the first eight minutes of play. After Canterbury’s Krista Thompson provided an answer with 14:43 left in the first half, Endelmann and Riley Koenig scored within a minute of each other to make it 5-1.

“We were just really hustling and working together,” Forker said.

Smith, however, served as the difference in net, saving 23 shots and never letting the Cougars get closer than five goals in the second half.

“It was really the defense. I’d tell them to lean one way or another with our zone so we’d have the entire net covered,” Smith said.

Thompson and Peyton Hornung, Canterbury’s leading scorers who combined for over 160 goals this season, were held to just three. Katy Matter had three goals for the Cougars.

Canterbury looked to be making a run in the second half when Matter and Thompson found the back of the net to make it 11-6, but Koenig found Forker on a pretty pass from behind the net and Endelmann scored on a drive to the net to close the door on the Cougars.

“I told them to remember how this feels,” Canterbury coach Wylie Crisanti said. “The Estero girls used last year’s game as motivation to do what they did tonight. We need to do that next season.”

The Bishop Verot boys lacrosse team breaks the huddle after a timeout during its 12-4 loss at Sarasota Cardinal Mooney in a first-round play-in game Friday.

SARASOTA — The Bishop Verot boys lacrosse team has won four consecutive district titles, but has yet to get past a first-round play-in game. Vikings coach Gary Neese challenged himself to prepare his players to take that next step.

Unfortunately, Sarasota Cardinal Mooney will more than likely be there again to try and stop his team next season.

Mooney (19-5) eliminated Verot (14-9) for the third straight season as four different Cougars tallied two goals in a 12-4 victory Friday at Austin Smithers Stadium.

The Cougars move on to face Barron Collier, a 12-11 winner over Gulf Coast, in a  second-round play-in game Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Vikings were left with a bitter taste in their mouths after losing another win-or-go-home game against Mooney by eight goals or more.

“They’re a talented team. They’re well-coached,” Neese said of Mooney. “They probably play some better competition around the Tampa area. Lee County is probably one of the weaker districts in the state. Unfortunately, we’re committed to playing all those teams twice and it doesn’t give us a chance to branch out as much as we can against other quality teams.”

Mooney scored four of the first five goals in the first quarter and eventually took a 7-2 lead when Caleb Ward whipped a shot into the back of the net with under five minutes left in the first half.

Senior attacker Reagan Griffith, the Lynn University signee who had two goals, in particular gave Verot problems. He tallied the first goal of the game and an insurance goal in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

“He just killed us,” Neese said. “Good thing he’s graduating. Maybe that will give us a chance next year.”

Verot outscored Mooney 2-1 in the third quarter behind scores from midfielder Olin Peck and attacker Joe Cerniglia to cut the lead to four goals. However, the momentum shifted dramatically early in the fourth on Mooney midfielder Christian Berendes’ second goal of the game.

The five-goal deficit with 10 minutes to play forced the Vikings out of their zone and into a man-to-man defense out of desperation, which allowed Mooney to pick it apart for three more goals.

While Neese’s frustration showed at times during the game, he couldn’t deny Verot had added another successful season to the books.

“I’m always going to look at winning our district as a successful season,” Neese said. “Right now, we’re trying to take that next step and get into the state playoffs. That’s the hurdle we have to clear. We have a lot of players coming back. We’re going to try again next year. That’s my challenge to get this team to that level.”

Canterbury signs eight athletes to national letters of intent on Thursday inside the gymnasium.

Canterbury signs eight athletes to national letters of intent on Thursday inside the gymnasium.

Canterbury senior Michael Matter swears he didn’t do it knowingly.

Only after he committed to Belmont University the day after he visited the Nashville campus, he said, he learned he would be competing against his Cougars teammate Carter Smith, who committed to the University of Memphis in September.

“It worked out in a funny way,” said Matter, who will join the Division I Bruins on a partial scholarship.

On Thursday, both Matter and Smith signed their national letters of intent to play with their respective schools, along with six other Canterbury athletes inside the school’s gymnasium.

Five baseball players from Canterbury’s nationally ranked program signed to play for collegiate programs, including shortstop Gus Cunningham, who picked Ohio University. Athletic director Frank Turco said all five will receive partial scholarships.

On Monday, the Cougars moved up Maxpreps’ Xcellent 25 rankings to No. 7, their highest of the season.

“It felt like home,” said Cunningham, who will join the Division I Bobcats. “They were good people up there. On my visit, it was actually snowing, which it really didn’t matter to me much. I felt like home there.”

Bryan Eberle inked with Division II Barry University and Jake Crandon signed with Division III Berry College

Chapin Leatherwood signed to play lacrosse with Emmanuel College, Charles Ellis will join Baldwin Wallace University for football and Caroline Flaharty will join the volleyball program at Bowdoin College.

The only viable goal remaining for the Cougars, Matter said, is competing for a state championship. Canterbury reached as far as the state semifinals last season before falling short.

“The rankings, it’s nice and great for the school, but really we’re playing for our school and trying to win a state championship,” he said. “And I think there is some pressure, but I don’t think it’s phasing us at all. We’re so focused and determined, the rankings aren’t playing a huge role in how we play.”

The All-Area Stars winners gather at the fifth annual banquet.

When it comes to talent, excitement and success in high school sports, Southwest Florida athletes and programs are among the best in the nation.

We’re the place that built Prime Time (NFL Hall-of-Fame cornerback Deion Sanders), and the region that molded The Freak (former NFL defensive end Javon Kearse).

Their success begs for a celebration. And so we’re having one, and all of Southwest Florida is invited.

On May 31, The News-Press Media Group will host its sixth annual All-Area Stars Sports Awards at Germain Arena. Former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith, the all-time leading rusher in NFL history and a former University of Florida athlete, will be the event’s quest speaker.

The banquet is open to the public and tickets include dinner. Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the awards program and Smith to follow from 6:30-9 p.m. For tickets, click here.
