CJ Lewis wants to prove doubters wrong at Jacksonville

Cape Coral senior CJ Lewis signed with Jacksonville on Friday.

Cape Coral senior CJ Lewis signed with Jacksonville on Friday.

When National Signing Day arrived last month, Cape Coral senior CJ Lewis was still weighing his options.

Time made no difference to the Seahawks’ wide receiver, as long as the eventual decision resulted in a positive path for the next four years of his life.

He had choices ranging from a preferred walk-on package with the Florida State University football program, to merit scholarships with Football Championship Subdivision schools like Jacksonville and Stetson.

So he waited, consulted with his parents and ultimately made the decision to join a program on the rise like Jacksonville, which went 9-2 in 2015.

On Friday, Lewis signed his letter of intent to join the Dolphins. Cape Coral also recognized Madison Waddle, who signed with Indiana University’s rowing team, and Kaya London, who joined Buffalo State’s women’s lacrosse team.

“I had to make sure I made the right decision,” said Lewis, who also had offers to Indiana State and Lafayette. “This is an investment in my life and the next four years was a big decision to make. I just wanted to wait it out and make the best decision for me.”

Mariner rallies past Cape Coral, 57-48

Lewis totaled 52 receptions for 779 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2015. He had four 100-yard games, including a career-high 135 yards and two touchdowns in his final game against Mariner on Nov. 6.

He finished with 91 catches for 1,364 yards and 13 touchdowns over the past two seasons.

“Honestly, this is the culmination of a plan and the beginning of a dream,” Lewis’ father Chris said. “Our focus has always been the plan, and the dream is just a bonus.”

Lewis, who plans to study economics at Jacksonville, ultimately had to choose a different path. His sisters, Arinelle and Asia, both attend FSU and the Seminoles worked hard to land Lewis as well.

Asia even learned she was accepted into FSU’s law program the same day Lewis signed with Jacksonville.

“Florida State, it was a great option, but I wanted to go somewhere where I was wanted and could play eventually,” Lewis said. “Jacksonville, when they first recruited me, I liked the coaching staff. They were on me heavy.”

Lewis eventually wants to set an example on the field.

“I’ve been underrated my whole life,” he said. “And I’ve had doubters my whole life.”

Lewis nails audition in second half for Cape Coral

“It was definitely a long, hard process,” Lewis added. “A lot of schools tell you they like you and there’s a lot of talking going on, but I’m glad I’m finally finished and signed with Jacksonville.”

Lewis will attend the school on a merit scholarship. He currently has a 3.92 GPA at Cape Coral.

Seahawks head football coach Larry Gary said Lewis often displayed his smarts on the field, too.

“He’s going to surprise some people,” Gary said. “He plays like 3.9 on the field. He’s a smart kid.”

Mull: Mistakes cost Fort Myers coach, player lacrosse season

Lacrosse sticks, gloves, balls and sports helmet on artificial turf

Lacrosse sticks, gloves, balls and sports helmet on artificial turf

The fracture within the Fort Myers High lacrosse community began when its coach got fired.

Then the talk began, and then a parent stood up for his son, and then the administration refused to explain the situation.

I get it.

It’s a tough situation here, and no one wins. Fort Myers High wants this situation to go away, and many around the program want it to pass, too — because they don’t want, as they say “to have their season cancelled” — but the problem here is that things were done wrong on a number of levels.

Chip Dopman was fired on Feb. 25, just two days after he dismissed a senior from the team in the middle of the locker room in front of his peers. But what didn’t help, on surface level, was that the coach’s own firing came just hours after the son’s parent met with the Fort Myers administration.

Whether the firing was right or wrong isn’t up for much debate. Dopman, who coached the Green Wave to a District 26 runner-up finish last season, compromised his coaching duties by addressing the student in an inappropriate way.

But the parent’s insertion into the situation also did not look good, because it gave the impression that he undercut the job Fort Myers High had to do.

The incident was corroborated by interim coaches at Fort Myers High, Josh Vazquez and Keith Insolia, and one senior player  who was in the locker room when it took place.

It followed a tough loss to Canterbury on Feb. 23, when a number of unsportsmanlike behaviors took place from a number of players, though a specific incident prompted Fort Myers Assistant Principal Matt Bredenkamp to speak to the player on the sideline just hours before he was kicked off the team.

That mood followed into the locker room when Dopman began addressing his team. Toward the end of the postgame talk, when Dopman said changes would be made to the roster the following day, he heard laughter from the player. He addressed the student, who did not say much back, and then continued.

But the situation escalated again and Dopman, feeling like he had to make an immediate decision, was forced to address the player specifically.

In a moment he says he now regrets, the coach said four key words that resulted in the dismissal of the player that, according to the Lee County School District employee handbook, would require an immediate examination of his position with the team.

Even nearly two weeks later, Dopman, who earned just a $1,700 stipend coaching the Green Wave, knows he shouldn’t have said what he said.

He’s a married father of two boys, and the kind of man who many respect around the area.

Over the course of his years coaching lacrosse in Southwest Florida, his friends and coaching colleagues have said, he’s been a character study in patience.

“He’s the most mild mannered, under control, passionate, caring individual that I know,” said Geoff Moore, a former Fort Myers High assistant and club coach with the Fort Myers Sharks program. “That’s not saying that as a friend, that’s saying one guy to another. I have never seen Chip, ever, in my entire life, react in a way that’s unbecoming of somebody that’s coaching kids or youth or adults.”

Yet, Dopman was wrong in one way. He should have afforded himself and the player a better space to air out his grievances, rather than in front of the entire team.

Whether the decision was warranted or not to dismiss the player, and whether the behavioral issues reportedly tied to the player stemmed from years of insubordination, that player earned a more private moment with the coach to explain why he needed to change, or why he needed to leave the program. Simple as that.

Teenagers are prone to making mistakes, and they can change. Offering consequences can make a difference. Ultimately, any larger attitude change required a larger discussion with his own parents.

I can understand why the father got involved. He says his son’s dismissal was unwarranted and so he needed to be willing to stand up for his son. Any other parent, put in their son’s shoes that very same night, would do the same.

On a basic level, anyone could understand that.

But would Dopman be gone without the father’s input? That’s a question we might not ever know.

Perhaps it’s the reason why the parent got involved in the first place. While it took just two days for Fort Myers to fire Dopman, it took the administration eight days to file the incident report that took place on Feb. 23.

Dopman was let go over the phone, rather in writing. And the administration, which refused to speak to me after a request for comment, forbid students to talk to me just days after the incident occurred, although one did anyway.

If Fort Myers was more transparent, maybe it wouldn’t have prompted so much speculation.

The school dropped the ball in this whole thing, too.

Many parents told me they feared their son’s would lose their season if they spoke to me. Others told me they felt the decision to let Dopman go was a knee-jerk reaction that required more inspection.

Some parents wrote letters to the athletic director, Cameron Yearsley, asking for a better resolution.

“I called him directly and we had a long conversation,” said Steven Brunner, a parent of a player. “My letter in general was not pleased with their quick reaction.”

The main question revolved around why Dopman, who hadn’t had issues disciplining players before, was fired so quickly. Why didn’t they suspend him?

“I think we banded together and all communicated with our own little text group, and now letters, not supporting the kneejerk reaction the school had,” Brunner said. “We all asked for possibility a suspension or at least a larger review until all the facts come out.”

Dopman deserved an extended explanation as to why he was being let go.

The player deserved more of a discussion with his coach and his season intact.

Neither have been reinstated to the team in the nearly two weeks since, and neither likely will.

That’s the biggest wrong in this whole situation.

Mistakes have cost both their seasons.

Riverdale High

Tom Roszell, who coached Riverdale for three years from 2007-09 before health issues forced him to step down, is back as the Raiders' head football coach.

Tom Roszell, who coached Riverdale for three years from 2007-09 before health issues forced him to step down, is back as the Raiders’ head football coach.

During the FHSAA wrestling championships at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee on Friday and Saturday, Riverdale High principal Gerald Demming and athletic director Tom Roszell came to an agreement.

Roszell, who coached the Raiders for three years from 2007-09 before health issues forced him to step down, would get his second chance coaching the Riverdale football program for the 2016 season.

Roszell also took over for Rob Hinson in 2013 on an interim basis when the then-coach decided to spend more time with his family. He coached Lehigh from 2000-02, guiding the Lightning from an 0-10 season in his debut to an 8-3 campaign in his last year, which included the program’s first ever state playoff berth.

“We really sat down and discussed it a lot at the state wrestling meet,” Demming said. “And we were able to work everything out. We want to promote our kids and we want to promote our program. More than that, we want to get back to our winning ways.”

Damon Jones resigns at Riverdale, headed to St. John Neumann

Roszell went 19-13 in three seasons with the Raiders, including two state playoff appearances, and netted a District 3A-11 championship in 2009, going 9-2 overall. The Raiders were district runner-ups in 2008 and finished 7-4.

Roszell, who became the Riverdale athletic director following the retirement of Boyd Gruhn in 2003, was unavailable for comment on Tuesday because of an athletic director’s meeting at Gulf Coast High.

Demming said he spoke exclusively with Roszell at the wrestling state championships about the position following the departure of Damon Jones, who coached the Raiders for the past three seasons and finished 3-7 in 2016.

The Raiders did not open up the job to any other candidates. Instead, Demming said, he wanted to give Roszell an opportunity to finish what he started.

“Once Coach Roszell said he’d like to do it again, I was very pleased with that,” Demming said. “He was such a good influence on our kids and our staff members and other coaches at Riverdale High, I wanted to give him a chance.”

Jones, a Dartmouth graduate and Naples native, resigned from Riverdale the same day he accepted the position of athletic director and football coach at St. John Neumann on Feb. 27. He was 11-19 in his tenure with the Raiders.

Demming said Jones laid a good foundation and that he wanted Roszell to continue to build.

“He has a clean bill of health and he decided he wanted to get back into it,” Demming said. “I wanted to get our program to where it was and better. Damon had a good start on it and I wanted somebody who has won a district championship. He’s done all that.”
