It’s time to vote for The News-Press high school athlete of the week. Voting will close at noon on Thursday.
Nominees are derived from scores and stats called and emailed in by Lee County coach’s during the week. Voting begins each Monday at 2 p.m.
Coaches can email scores to sports@news-press.com or call in scores at 239-335-0357. The deadline for each night’s results is 10:30 p.m.
Here are this week’s nominees based on their performances between Feb. 22-27.
Girls tennis
Emily Javedan, Canterbury, eighth grade
Javedan lost just two games in victories over No. 1 singles players from Southwest Florida Christian Academy and Oasis last week.
Boys tennis
John Carlin, Fort Myers, junior
Carlin knocked off Cypress Lake No. 1 singles player Zachary Blythe 6-1, 6-0 in crucial match as the Green Wave edged the Panthers 4-3 on Thursday.
Baseball
Austin Hayman, Cypress Lake, senior
The right-hander tossed six strong innings, giving up one earned run and striking out 15 batters in a 5-3 win over Mariner on Feb. 23.
Softball
Cassidy Dvorsky, Estero, senior
The center fielder went 6-for-8 with three home runs and seven RBI last week in wins over Seacrest Country Day, Oasis and South Fort Myers.
Girls lacrosse
Peyton Hornung, Canterbury, junior
The Cougars attacker scored five goals and logged five assists during a 15-9 win over Fort Myers on Monday. She added six goals and two assists for Canterbury in a 14-11 win over Cypress Lake on Friday. She has 22 goals and 10 assists on the season.
Boys lacrosse
Butch Bolger, Canterbury, senior
Bolger had five goals on Tuesday in a 14-5 win over Fort Myers and added three goals during a 14-1 win against Cypress Lake on Friday.
Girls track and field
Fort Myers 3,200-meter relay team: Grace Paul (senior), Julia Holston (freshman), Fiona Kurland (sophomore), Sidney Oakes-Lottridge (junior)
At the Naples Relays Invitational on Saturday, the Fort Myers team of Paul, Holston, Kurland and Oakes-Lottridge defeated defending Class 3A 3,200-meter relay champion Estero (which sports a much different team this season) with a time of 10:15.15.
Boys track and field
Dunbar 400-meter relay team: Natyri Pitts (senior), Seneca Milledge (freshman), Lajuan Preston (junior), Desmond Davis (freshman)
The Tigers are fast becoming one of the best 400-meter relay teams in Southwest Florida. They won the Naples Relays Invitational on Saturday with a time of 42.08, which outpaced Fort Myers and Ida Baker. Defending Class 3A state champion South Fort Myers finished sixth.
Wrestling
Judas McKenzie, Dunbar, sophomore
McKenzie dominated the 220-pound field at the Region 1A-3 championships, scoring four pins on his way to a region title. He’ll be in the mix for a state title this weekend in Kissimmee.
